How to Play Mölkky: Rules, Scoring and Strategy
Learn how to play Mölkky, the Finnish throwing game: setup, scoring, the exact-50 rule and tips. Then try Peggy!, our own pin-throwing game.

The Mölkky® game is a Finnish throwing game that has spread to gardens, parks and beaches around the world. You throw a wooden stick at a cluster of numbered pins, score points for the ones you knock over, and race to reach exactly 50. The rules take two minutes to learn, which is a big part of its charm.
This guide explains the commonly played rules in our own words: what you need, how to set up, how scoring works, the famous exact-50 rule and a few tips. For official sets and the full official rules, visit the owner's site, molkky.com. At the end you can try Peggy!, our own pin-throwing game.
What you need
- 12 wooden pins, numbered 1 to 12
- One wooden throwing stick
- A flat patch of grass, sand or similar, with room to throw
You can play on your own against a score, but it is best with two or more players or teams.
Setting up
- Stand the pins upright in a tight group, close together.
- Mark a throwing line about 3 to 4 metres from the pins.
- Decide who goes first and the order of play.
You throw the stick underhand, from behind the line. After each turn, stand the knocked-over pins back up exactly where they landed, rather than returning them to the starting group. The pins spread out as the game goes on, so later throws become more about accuracy than power.
How scoring works
- Knock over one pin: you score the number on that pin.
- Knock over two or more pins: you score the number of pins that fell, whatever their numbers.
- Knock over none: you score zero.
So knocking over the 12 pin on its own scores 12, but knocking over three pins at once scores only 3. A single high-numbered pin is worth far more than a messy scatter.
The exact-50 rule
The first player or team to reach exactly 50 points wins. You cannot win by going over: if your score would pass 50, you drop back to 25 and carry on from there.
That rule is what makes the game tense. A player on 47 does not want a big throw, and a player on 38 has to choose between a safe single pin and a gamble.
Three misses and you are out
If you miss three times in a row, you are out of the game. A miss means no pins fall. Any scoring throw starts your count again.
Strategy tips
- Build a lead early. Take whatever scores most reliably while you are far from 50.
- Aim at one pin near the end. If you need 7, aim at the 7, not at a group that could overshoot or score too little.
- Do not panic after a bust. Dropping to 25 hurts, but you can still catch up quickly.
- Keep your throw consistent. Use the same line, the same arc and the same release.
- Watch your opponents. If someone is close to 50, you may need to take a risk.
Try a similar game: Peggy!
Peggy! is our own, independent pin-throwing game. It is not a Mölkky game, but it uses a similar scoring idea: knock down pins, score their numbers, and land exactly on 50 or bust back to 25. Miss three times and you are out.
It adds real physics, so no two throws play the same. There is a campaign across ten hand-built courses and a daily challenge with a global leaderboard. You can play a friend locally or online, or take on AI opponents drawn from Finnish folklore.
Play Peggy! in your browser. It is currently free, and a free Zonto account keeps your progress, scores and achievements.
